Day Camps

Elk Bay Adventures are excited to offer a number of day camps throughout the year. These usually run from 8am to 6pm and all transport and equipment will be provided. Please refer to individual outings for booking details, additional clothing required and specific instructions. Payment for day camps can be made by clicking on the Reserve button and filling in your personal information and making payment using a valid credit card.

Paddle Canada Lakewater Tandem Canoe CourseDate: 05/15/2021Time: Saturday, May 15, 2021 - 09:00 to 16:00

This canoe course is ideal for people who want to learn canoeing basics and lead groups on the water. It's a great preparation for your first canoe trip, leading youth in outdoor pursuits, and learning basic canoe strokes and manoeuvres. In the course you will learn: Forward, stopping and reverse Basic turns while paddling forward Spins and Sideslip maneuvers Capsizes and Rescues Canoeing Safety guidelines and equipment Paddles, PFDs and other gear Storing and waterproofing gear Paddling positions and boat trim Handling waves and wind Launching and landing This is a one-day course and will include several opportunities for group leadership games and plenty of time on the water. Participants are advised to bring their own water bottle, packed lunch and PFD if they have one. Lifejackets, canoes, paddles and safety equipment will be provided. Participants will receive their Introduction to Tandem Lake Canoeing certificate from Paddle Canada upon successful completion of the course. Been caving before?  Enjoyed it? If you want to challenge your skills and venture into larger, deeper caves, then this is a great next step! We'll visit some caves on the North Island that are large and provide an opportunity to learn more about cavern development, and see waterfalls at work! You'll get some experience in rappelling undeground and we'll visit several large chambers. This trip runs over two days, and we will be camping overnight. Program Outline Intermediate Caving Thursday 22 March   2pm Depart Nanaimo and travel to North Island 5pm Arrive at campground and set up camp (tents provided) 6pm - 7pm Dinner 8pm - 9.30pm Visit Little Huson Caves 9.30pm - 11pm Campfire Friday 23 March   8am - 9am Breakfast 9am - 10am Travel to Artlish Caves Provincial Park 10am - 4pm Visit Artlish Caves 4pm - 5pm Light snack before departing 5pm - 9pm Return to Nanaimo

Beginners CavingDate: 03/20/2018Time: Tuesday, March 20, 2018 - 08:00 to 18:00

Join us for a one day introduction to underground Vancouver Island. We'll be departing at 8am from Nanaimo and travelling to the Cowichan Valley wheer you will get to experience several caves and learn about how the caves are formed and how we can protect them. This is a beginner trip and no previous experience is required. All coveralls and safety equipment is provided. Please bring a water bottle, lunch is provided.

This is a wonderful experience for anyone that enjoys hiking! We'll depart Nanaimo by Elk Bay minibus to the trailhead. The hike will take approximately 3 hours to the summit, with breathtaking views of the Island and the Georgia Strait. A packed lunch is provided and hikers will be provided with a day sack to carry with their lunch and water bottle. Please bring a FULL WATER BOTTLE and wear good, sturdy boots or hikers. Sorry, no trainers!

Caving - Lake CowichanDate: 08/14/2018Time: Tuesday, August 14, 2018 - 08:00 to 18:00

Today we visit some local caves near Lake Cowichan. You will get to explore underground passages and find hidden chambers, while learning all about how the caves are formed. We depart from Nanaimo at 8am and will drive by minibus to the caves. You will be provided with a safety helmet and headlamp. Please bring rubber boots and a full change of clothes in case you get wet or muddy! A packed lunch is provided. Spaces are limited so reserve your space early.

Canoeing - Nanaimo LakesDate: 08/13/2018Time: Sunday, August 13, 2017 - 08:00 to 18:00

Join us for a day canoeing on the Nanaimo Lakes. This day camp runs from 8am to 6pm and lunch will be provided. We leave Nanaimo by minibus and head to the Nanaimo Lakes where you will spend the day learning new canoe skills, playing games and exploring hidden beaches and coves. We'll stop for a BBQ lunch and swim, followed by an afternoon on the water as we head into Lake 2. This day camp is for youth who want to try canoeing or have an interest in developing canoe skills, in a fun and safe environment. Spaces are limited.
